Wanderloop Location App

Wanderloop is a completely vibe-coded Android app that I've been working on and using full time every day since September 2025.

It's a location tracking (eg. Moves, SilentLog, Google Timeline, Slopes), location check-in (Foursquare, Swarm, Gowalla), place list (Google Place Lists) and search (Google Maps) Android app.

Wanderloop is always running on my Android phone running in the background, has the features that I want, the styling that I decided for myself, a DAU (Daily Active User) of one.

The primary feature of the app is to track where I go every day, allow me to mark the semantic location manually (check ins) either at the time I'm there or later when I remember.

The location tracking it completely local, nothing is sent to a server except for daily backups that optionally can be stored on a cloud storage provider.

The check-ins are also stored locally, but will hit the Google Maps API for place search and place details.

The checkins and location data are easily exportable to a JSON export, and also can be imported through a custom JSON format. Being able to import and export data at will is one of the key concepts here.

Because I can export the data, I can then visualize the data in more advanced tools or be able to integrate it with other apps if I vibe-code a conversion tool for them.

There's a secondary feature of managing place lists that is similar to Google Place Lists in Maps where you can remember "Favorites" and "Want to go", but is again completely local to the app.

The semantics for lists are different to Google Maps, where each list is really a tag, so I can tag the place with as many lists as I want (eg. Hokkaido 2026, Coffee, Favorite). And the way we browse lists/tags is that you can open one tag and the filter with intersections of other tags.

It's the way that I always had thought lists should work, and it's even how I try to organize my lists in Google Maps, but unfortunately, Lists never evolved to that powerful feature that allowed me to tag the world.

A third experimental concept I'm experimenting with in this app is combining the idea of Search and Lists together.

The idea is that every search becomes an ephermal list. In my usage of Google Maps, I'm often tying to search for a place to go, and i'll performing multiple searches, and mentally dismissing options (McDonalds, chain fast food), but I'd rather be able to do multiple searches in a single session and dismiss all the ones that are no good, keep the ones that are likely candidates.

So that are similar operations to a list. The other thing is that once you search for a list of places, you may not need it again until later when you arrive there. So persisting the search results is the concept. Be able to convert search results into a saved list that you can recall.

And then because it is a list, you could re-issue another search and append to an existing list.

The concept is still quite rough and lots of complexity that needs to be simplified.

Many friends I've shown this to ask whether they can use this. I have some reservations on sharing this with people who are not myself.

Because this whole codebase is vibe-coded, I can't really vouch for what is there. While I can take the risk of fatal bugs that might destroy your data, I can't put my friends and others data at risk too.

So for now, this is still an app for myself. But if I continue to get requests for it, then I will figure out a way to do a limited release to those who understand and tolerate the risk.
