Geo Tokyo meetup website

Shane Reustle and I have been organizing a meetup called Geo Tokyo. We've done 8 meetups do far, after every meetup we send the links and list of presentations to attendees. But these notes are scattered around the internet and we wanted to put this all together into a single site to act as a record of our meetups, but also to help us organize the future ones too.

Shane has thoughtfully registered geotokyo.com from back in 2020 when we first organized it. And so we had the domain already, all I needed to do was design and build the site.

Using Claude Design with Fable 5.1, I made a first pass at the design, which had a fairly long initial prompt and a few followups. Once I was happy with it, I made create a HTML handoff and fed it to Claude Code and made it build the site.

I made sure that Claude Code knew that the site was going to be a static site with no db backend, all the content was going to be checked in as markdown files and images directly into the repo. We even added a few skills to make common tasks easy like adding new URLs (/add-maps-link) and attaching them to an event (/set-map-discussed) to the site. This way you can just fire up Claude Code and add a link we want to discuss and it would handle creating the markdown file, fetching description and thumbnail images, and pushing the site.

To get the content in, I mostly just fed it the list of all 8 of our meetup information as a list of meetup.com and luma.com URLs, along with a few meeting notes doc we had kept as organizers. Claude Code extracted all the information out and arranged everything. I went in to hand review each of the meetup information and made a few design changes.

I'm really happy with how the website turned out, how easy it was to make all the messy data into an organized repo. The site now even acts as a repository of interesting maps (focusing on Japan) that we find around the internet, queued up and ready for discussion in our next meetup.
